A look at two main models:
Traditional Progressive
Each class is one grade One class may have several grades
Teacher directs learning Students and teacher direct learning
Subjects like reading, math, and science are taught separately Subjects like reading, math, and sciences tied to themes like Polar regions or Native Americans
Students get most instruction as large group Students often learn cooperatively in small groups
Concrete, factual knowledge is emphasized How you learn is as important as what you learn
Belief that achievement leads to self-esteem Belief that self-esteem leads to achievement
Teacher is authority figure Teacher is a coach and helper
Achievement reported with letter grades Progress reported by multiple methods
