Competitive activity that challenges students to use logic and reasoning skills

Assessment tool measuring the academic literacy progress of students who speak limited English

LD - Learning Disabilities

(Also called IPCD, PC, PCD, and SLLD) Serves students with a discrepancy between estimated intellectual potential and actual level of performance because of problems processing information

Learning Center

Services provided to special education students outside the regular classroom for portion of the school day

Learning Pods

A cluster of several classrooms that share washrooms and teacher work areas

LEP - Limited English Proficiency

Program to help students from non-English-speaking homes learn English as quickly as possible.

Level Tests

District-wide curriculum tests which measure student achievement and academic growth on portions of the district’s curriculum

Library Power

Grant funds from Reader’s Digest and PEBC, which coordinates grant; media specialist is trained to teach children how to access materials so school library can be open all day for student research; grant funds include additional library materials

Lightspan

Homework accomplished on a Sony playstation which is loaned by the school; school districts are awarded this technology grant by Microsoft Corp.

Lindamood-Bell Learning Process

A visualizing, verbalizing, and phonics-based program which requires specific steps and teacher-student interaction as a means to develop language comprehension and expression

Link Program, also Link Crew

High school freshmen and new students establish mentorships with older students trained to ease the transition from middle school and foster a positive start to the school year

LIT - Learners In Training

Reading intervention program; includes shared, guided, and independent instruction; also called Read to Succeed

Literacy League

Multi-cultural reading and writing process

Literature Based

Teaching reading through using works of literature rather than using basal readers

LMC - Library Media Center

Formerly called the school library; also called IMC

Looping

Students and teachers stay together for two or more years
