CAC - Communicative Academic & Cognitive

Special education program

Carnegie School

Model school for other schools in the state; Carnegie school works with other schools to help them along the same path; program includes grant money

Carnegie Units

Name for commonly used credit hours earned by high school students to fulfill graduation requirements

CAT - California Achievement Test

Standardized achievement test measuring reading, language, and mathematics skills, also CAT-5

CBLA - Colorado Balanced Literacy Assessment

CCIRA - Colorado Council of International Reading Association

CDE - Colorado Department of Education

CDM - Collaborative Decision Making Committee

Team of parents, teachers, administrators, and community/business members sharing decision making about school policies, budgets, and other management issues

Center School (or program)

School with a program to meet a special need; students needing the program come from other schools to attend

Challenge

Program for students with outstanding academic ability and creativity

Challenge Program (Jefferson County)

Severely handicapped students are integrated wherever possible into regular classrooms

Chapter II

Federal funds used in schools for innovation, training, and materials

Charter School

School created under Colorado Senate bill 93-183 as a public school which may use innovative teaching methods and independent curricula, free from many of the constraints placed on “regular” public schools

Character Counts

A focus on six pillars of character: respect, responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, and citizenship

CHEER

Cherry Creek Schools preschool program for children with one or more developmental delays

Child Find

Agency which screens preschoolers to identify special needs

CHIPS - Challenging High Intellectual Potential Students

Program for academically gifted students

Cities in Schools

Public/private partnership, alternative instructional program for students at risk of dropping out or who could benefit from a more “personalized” approach

CLIP - Collaborative Literacy Intervention Project

Strategy for teaching reading using small groups; children hear patterns; see Reading Recovery

Closed Campus

High school in which students do not leave the school grounds during the school day without permission

Coalition of Essential Schools

An organization leading a nation-wide reform effort to raise students’ learning standards

COCIS

Computer program with career information and guidance for high school students

Co-curricular

Activities and programs outside the regular classroom which enrich and enhance the curriculum

Colorado Preschool Project

Funding source for a collaboration between a school district and other child care facilities and organizations, such as Mile High Child Care; goal is to prepare preschoolers with the language skills needed to be successful in school; specially trained teachers are available for language development

Community School

After-school, evening, and weekend classes for students and adults; tuition is usually charged

Completion rate

Percentage of students under age 21 who graduate and who receive certificates or other designations of high school completion

Comprehensive Competencies Program

Alternative for high school students and adults to get credits for graduation in a program tailor-made for the student

Conflict Managers

Students trained to help other students solve problems on the playground and/or among peers

Cooperative Learning

Students are placed in small groups, working together to achieve certain learning objectives in the classroom

COPE - Collaboration On Prevention and Education

Drug/alcohol awareness and prevention

Core Knowledge

Curriculum developed by E.D. Hirsch with a prescribed set of facts in each subject area which children should learn at each grade level; usually part of a “back to basics” or fundamental program

COSIS

Career exploration computer program

Cross-Categorical Special Education

Services provided to students with one or more special needs, integrating the services to meet all the students’ needs. Also called non-categorical special education.

CSAP - Colorado Standards Assessment Program

State-developed test of reading, writing, math, and science ability administered annually to all Colorado students in grades 3 - 10; based on Colorado Model Content Standards, measures achievement against a specified standard for performance, as opposed to comparison to other students; student performance is categorized into four levels - Unsatisfactory, Partially Proficient, Proficient, and Advanced.; students recording reading and mathematics results in three of the four levels, with the exception of Unsatisfactory, are judged to meet the demands of grade level performance defined in national legislation by the No Child Left Behind Act.

CTB Terra Nova

Standardized achievement tests developed by CTB McGraw Hill measuring reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies skills

CTBS - Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills

Standardized achievement tests measuring reading, language, and mathematics skills

Curriculum

The variety of content information and materials a teacher uses to enable students to learn and apply the knowledge and skills expected of them

DARE - Drug Awareness and Resistance Education

Day Treatment

DEAR - Drop Everything And Read

Time in the school day for everyone to read silently

DECA - Distributive Education Clubs of America

Marketing education for high school students

DEEP - Denver Educational Excellence Program

For high-achieving students in grades 5-8 interested in science and mathematics, focus on minority students

Degrees of Reading Power

Pre- and post-tests to determine students’ growth in reading during the school year

Diagnostic/Prescriptive Learning

Identifies each student’s specific skill strengths and weaknesses, then teaches to areas in need, while maintaining skills already mastered

DIBELS – Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills

Assessment administered to grades K – 6. Data is used to guide instruction and interventions.

Differentiated Instruction (DI)

A teaching philosophy based on the premise that teachers should adapt instruction to student differences
